CAF Set to Decide on Africa U-17 Cup of Nations Expansion
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee has made a historic decision to expand the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations tournament, a move that is set to transform the landscape of youth football on the continent, create new opportunities for young players, and have a profound impact on the future of the beautiful game in Africa.
This decision comes on the heels of FIFA’s recent announcement to increase the U-17 World Cup from 24 to 48 teams. CAF must now decide how its allocated 10 representatives will be selected for the expanded global competition.
Ghana, in particular, has a vested interest in the outcome. The Black Starlets, who finished fourth in the recent WAFU tournament, are hoping for a larger AFCON size to secure their spot in the prestigious tournament. Currently, the CAF’s 12-team AFCON only allows two representatives from West Africa Zone B.
Will CAF opt for expansion, paving the way for more teams to participate, or maintain the status quo? The football community eagerly awaits the outcome of today’s meeting.
